Earth Beneath Our Feet Interactive Arts Festival November 5th
Free Event
A Spiralling Sight Production
Earth Beneath Our Feet is an inter-active arts festival involving collaborations across many different art mediums, from visual arts (interactive film), music, theatre, to body art and cultural and environmental awareness. The festival is based around the community participation in the interactive experiences provided. It is a free interactive experience that will connect all social diversities and minds allowing them to develop and grow through hands on creation.
It will be run on Saturday November 5th at Carclew Youth Arts Center from 12-10pm. |
Earth Beneath Our Feet is a celebration of filmmaker Nic Nic Ansell's masterpiece of cinematography documenting our country and our planet. The film has been a year and a half in the making. Earth Beneath Our feet shall be shown through several projectors on various surfaces throughout the festival. One will be rigged in a tree above a sand pit that will form a living sand screen. There will also be a screen rigged across the middle of a geo-dome with a rear projection of the movie looping throughout the day.
Earth Beneath Our Feet is the fourth film of a five part interactive series. This interactive film series is revolutionising the process in which films are being created by using real time footage of a theme screened to an audience who will create the script/dialogue.
The Living Sand Screen allows interactive manipulation of the screen which will change the projected image. During the day part of this event the Sand Screen will be open for anyone to play in. At night the interactive film will be projected onto the Sand Screen, giving it a new form created by the audience interaction.
After watching the images on the main screen, audience members are given the opportunity to enter a recording booth and speak their thoughts/feelings/emotions as provoked by the image. This voice recording will be connected with the image then seen and heard on the main screen roughly 10 minutes after it is recorded. Seeing the film complete with the audience participation on the main screen interconnects the understanding of the concepts in making interactive film on a subjective and visceral level.
This event is, as far as we know, a totally original experience in Australia and to draw comparisons to other work is not feasible.

Painting Area
The Painting Area is another interactive space giving the community an opportunity to create a mural of connectivity. Using traditional earth-based paints to experience the feel, smell and touch of living earth that will simulate an awareness of GAIA. Participants are given the opportunity to place a hand print on a giant canvas screen. Being able to paint on a screen projection will impact on where the participants choose to place their handprints as the canvas is not blank. This original concept will be experimented for the first known time at this event. This event will be attractive to families and it will have free henna/tribal/body painting available in this area for kids.
Stall Area
Working with Adelaide’s local businesses the stall area will draw in a larger audience. Thus providing the opportunity to support and be supported by small local businesses. Continuing with the theme of the event one of the stalls will be a plant swap. This will provide the community with an opportunity to bring along a plant and take home a different one. This will promote a swapping of ideas and knowledge and further an awareness of our native ecosystem and water smart gardening.
