Willydidj - Didgeridoo Maker, Percussionist,Teacher, Performer

After performing and workshops in the Northern states, we are fortunate that Willy is now based in Adelaide.

Willy Vlotman was born in South Africa, and at the age of ten left with his family for life in Australia.  As a qualified carpenter Willy travelled Australia to remote communities and embraced the culture of the Indigenous people, and they him.  He was given the tradition name Djaykun by the people of the North East Arnhem Land region, and adopted by Djalu, the custodian of the didgeridoo.

Willy learned to find, make, decorate and play  the didgeridoo, and over the past 20 years has grown to be one of  Australia’s most prominent didgeridoo  hunters, makers, teachers and players. This rare combination of knowledge in his craft produces top class didgeridoos, tuned to a specific key and decorated.  For the most part WillyDIDJ’s are made for playing purposes and graded for their playing qualities from beginners to professional concert class professionals.

“ The quality of my work is unsurpassed. I spend days looking for a didg to find the one…to find the one that lasts for lifetime.

Each didg is hand picked. I will bypass 20 trees or more until I find the right one.  I am just as comfortable playing my didg’s on stage in front of 5,000 people as I am making them, as I understand the unique sound each one makes, and this is some of the art I pass on to my students.”

Willy also plays the African Djeme and  has shared the stage with The Borderers, Kaha, Bantaba bindi , Peter Gareth, Daryl Braithwaite, Ross Wilson, The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Mike Lozette, Black Sorrows and many others.
